Film Bits: ‘Baywatch’ Releases First Trailer; First ‘Spider-Man’ Image Revealed

‘Baywatch’ Returns with The Rock and Zac Efron

Yo, the 90s were quaint as fuck, right? The three-camera sitcom was still a thing, the economy was mostly good, the biggest problem facing our world was Marilyn Manson, and Baywatch was somehow the greatest thing that ever happened. At one time, the David Hasslehoff starring vehicle—which helped launch Pamela Anderson as a minor superstar—was literally the most popular show in the world, what with its greased up muscleheads and slow motion shots of girls running in bikinis. Somehow, it even earned a spinoff, Baywatch Nights. As much as the 90s are never coming back (ever) that hasn’t stopped anyone from trying to capitalize off our collective nostalgia for that period of time. Which brings us to, well, Baywatch. The trailer for the reboot movie (remake? cash in? is there a difference between the three?) released its first trailer today and it still looks pretty awful. But at least there’s a shirtless The Rock and Zac Efron, right ladies? And bad jokes about looking at a woman’s boobs instead of her face, right fellas? Also, there’s an angry chief who isn’t sure they understand. Plus swimming in fire? Sure. Baywatch opens May 19, 2017.

First Official ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Image Released

spider-man

On the heels of yesterday’s trailer tease, and just ahead of the full trailer premiere later today on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Spider-Man: Homecoming revealed its first official image of Tom Holland in the spider-suit from the film in today’s edition of USA Today. The film is said to pick up shortly after the events of this year’s Civil War, with a newly legitimized Spider-Man trying to figure out his place in the world after joining up with Tony Stark against Captain America, and what they means for him as a teenager. As Holland says, “This is really a movie where Spider-Man’s not the finished article. He really does learn and he makes massive mistakes. It’s nice to see a kid do that and then try to rectify those mistakes.” Spider-Man: Homecoming opens July 7, 2017.

‘Little Shop of Horrors’ Lands Director

Greg Berlanti struck superhero gold with his Arrow-verse series for The CW. As the helmer of four interrelated DC shows, he’s made great strides as a storyteller and as a director in the five years since the premiere of Arrow. Now, Warner Brothers has tapped him to take on a new adaptation of Little Shop of Horrors. Screenwriter Matthew Robinson (The Invention of Lying) is penning the script, which is said to be a musical, updating the classic Frank Oz directed film from the 80s (itself an adaptation of an off-Broadway play, which was based on a Roger Corman movie from the 60s). Berlanti has proven himself capable of making the weird palatable, but Little Shop of Horrors has a special place in the hearts of a lot of people. It’s a risky endeavor but one which he feels worthy of taking.
