Merge Records has announced the addition of two new artists to the respected indie label. William Tyler has long been associated with Merge through his lengthy career as multi-instrumentalist in Lambchop. His 2011 debut solo album was described by Pitchfork as “arguably the most vital, energized album by an American solo guitarist in a decade or more.”
Reigning Sound was formed in 2001 by Memphis garage-punk legend Greg Cartwright, who is also known for his bands The Compulsive Gamblers and The Oblivians. The A.V. Club says: “Cartwright’s songwriting draws on Stax, Sun, and the Brill Building, combining a classic pop structure—simple and memorable—with a fair amount of only-got-this-studio-booked-for-an-hour immediacy.” Both artists will be releasing new albums in 2013.
To celebrate, Merge will be hosting their first CMJ showcase since 2008. Tickets are on sale this Friday (9/21) via the Mercury Lounge.
