Phish Halloween: Are You Excited Yet?

Unlike last year, when word spread far and wide about Sharon Jones and some of the Dap-Kings horn section appearance at Festival 8 days before the event leading some to realize Exile On Main Street was indeed Phish’s musical costume for 2009, those with the “inside scoop” have done a good job of keeping quiet. The only official clue we had came from Trey Anastasio’s interview with the LA Times and now Mike Gordon has shared his thoughts on this year’s costume with Benjy Eisen of Spinner.

The characteristically tight-lipped band is keeping mum about their final selection for this year’s big event, but bassist Mike Gordon (pictured) does have some words to say about it. “This has the potential to be the best one yet,” Gordon tells Spinner. “I’m really excited about it, to the point where I’m calling some of my friends and I’m saying, ‘Well, I don’t even have any more room on my guest list, but you’ve got to come somehow, because this is going to be the one.’ It just really feels right to me.” [via Spinner]

If those headed to the shows in Atlantic City weren’t excited enough already, this should put them over the edge. We’re just a few short days from Halloween and we want everyone’s final guess as to what musical costume Phish will don on Sunday night. So that’s our question this morning – what album do you think Phish will perform on Halloween?

  1. Born to Run/Nebraska/Darkness on the Edge of Town.

Springsteen would be appropriate given that they are in and Trey is from NJ.

  2. I have a gut feeling it’s going to be Gamehenge. Trey wanted to do this for Halloween from the get go but after the GameHoist gig in Charleston, WV in ’94 they toyed with the idea of doing somebody elses album. If Trey was really hinting at what was going to be played by saying “this one’s for me” and then referencing Goddard in Manchester I’d like to believe that everything Phish stands for will explode in Atlantic City this weekend. Hope so anyway. Have a great time for those of you going!

  3. The title of this post asks, are you excited yet? the answer is most definitely YES!!! And I’m sure since Trey is tight with Bieber (there are pictures on the interwebs that prove this), we will definitely be getting some Bieber love. :>)

  4. My heart says Derek & The Dominos’ Layla
My head says King Crimson Larks Tongues in Aspic

But they can play whatever the hell they want – I’m excited!!

  5. It will be my hit album Purple Rain. I talked to Trey and the boys over a nice bottle of Malbec a few months ago. They are great guys and I after the guitar lesson I have They they should be ready to go. He will even be using my purple guitar.

  6. They would totally rock any of these albums:

    Band of Gypsies
Rage Against the Machine – 1st album
    Thriller
    2112

While I used to listen to Loveless a lot, I don’t think it would be the best album to choose. I am sure I will enjoy whatever they do while I am inside the venue watching!!

  7. I’ve thought about this a lot. A few that seemed possible to me:

    Frank Zappa – Joe’s Garage
    Prince – Purple Rain
Queen – A Night At the Opera
Genesis – The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
    Michael Jackson – Thriller
    Eagles – Hotel California

  8. Pavement – Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
TV on the Radio – Dear Science
    Radiohead – Kid A
David Bowie – Ziggy Stardust ( Phish could kill “Moonage Daydream” )
    Ween – Chocolate and Cheese
All this and my gut says it’s the year of the Zep.
or my bloody vallentine….trailing off…..the boss

  9. DJ Kucinich, I’d love to see Galaxie 500, too, but somehow I think that the boys won’t be playing “On Fire”….

    Other’s I’d love:
Depeche Mode – Music for the Masses
    Flaming Lips – Yoshimi
The Kinks – Lola vs Powerman and the Moneygoround
    Neil Young – Greendale

But I don’t think they are going to play any of them.

They’ve always played Zeppelin here and there, and I think it is time for the costume. Phish has now played: Beatles, The Who, Pink Floyd, and now the Stones. Need to add the big #5 from British classic rock.

Physical Graffiti feels right to me. a) it’s long enough (they do like the double albums) b) has the right mix of instrumentation (JPJ started a heavier rotation on Keyboards with this album…earlier Led Zep has little to no keyboards) and it has Down by the Seaside, Led Zep’s goofiest, funnest song ever)

  10. OR… I could be totally wrong and they could play “Waiting for Columbus” by Little Feat, a band that nearly 13% of Phish Phans have HEARD of, and that nearly 4.5% of Phish Phans have ever actually listened too.

So, Little Feat may rock, but…. um, ok? If you wanted to surprise us, you could have actually played some galaxie 500!
