Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Nilsson Schmilsson

Harry Nilsson had always been one of those artist whose name I’ve recognized, mostly for the time he (in)famously spent with John Lennon that became known as “The Lost Weekend” and his contribution of Everybody’s Talkin’ to the Midnight Cowboy soundtrack, but someone that I never really knew too much about. To remedy that, last week I watched Who is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin’ About Him)?, which was originally released in 2006, but re-edited and re-released this year with rare footage and photographs of Nilsson as well as new interviews.

Nilsson, who worked nights at a bank computer center, while writing songs during the day, had some early songwriting success with the likes of The Yardbirds, The Shangri-La’s and The Monkees recording his tunes. It wasn’t until The Beatles famously named checked Nilsson as their favorite American artist during a 1968 press conference that his career started to take off.
