Stormy Mondays: Vintage Phish

While your ears will likely already be filled with plenty of Phish this week, why not add another heaping helping? This week’s Stormy Monday is a mix of vintage Vermont goodness drawn from three show in the early nineties: 4/25/93 in Geneseo, NY; 12/31/92 in Boston, MA; and 5/14/92 in Port Chester, NY. The first track is Possum from the Kuhl Gym on the SUNY campus – a school gym with seats on the floor and pull-out bleachers on the sides. An obscure show that is too often overlooked, it has this killer opener, complete with One Way Out teases, excellent versions of It’s Ice, Maze and a Tetris themed Col. Forbin’s in the first set, and a huge Mike’s late in the second set with Trey screaming (they had the smoke machine going, and it literally filled the room in an impenetrable haze–you can almost hear it).

The next two tracks are from NYE in 1992 at Matthews Arena, a slick, spacey Wilson and a brilliant Runaway Jim, followed by The Curtain > Tweezer from Geneseo. Next is one of my favorite Col. Forbin’s, also from the NYE gig, with a crazy story about spinning out of the room and freezing for an eternity–Page plays a few notes just after Trey says, “And we’re in Gamehenge,” that give me chills every time.

Finally, another classic closes things out, the Antelope from the Capitol Theater with its Spiderman teases and detailed secret language instructions. Vintage Phish to finish out the year. As always, enjoy!
