Postcards From Page Side: The Butler Did It

Butler also shines each Memorial Day weekend, with an early morning set at PGroove’s annual Amberland festival, simply referred to as “Brockfast,” simply due to the time of day it takes place and the fact that many are drinking coffee instead of the late night brewski.  With sessions that last in excess of two hours some years, Butler is able to deliver in a formal, yet loose, laidback setting everything his persona and solo schtick represent: life, love, loss, humor, an effortless grace and ease, oh, and my favorite – an occasional freestyle rap.

Another aspect of Butler’s act that deserves high praise is the fact that he is constantly incorporating new material into his act, more often than not brand new cover songs by other artists that he seemingly introduces to his audiences long before they become “popular” or well known. In fact, more than a few times he’s played a song in his sets that has me saying,”Wow! Who is that?” before he casually introduces me into the world of yet another great musical act.

I promise to include a much more in depth interview/chat and maybe an exclusive performance fror PFPS down the line, but for now I couldn’t resist starting with an introduction and another snapshot into the world of music that I usually like to keep reserved to myself for selfish reasons. Can you blame a guy for wanting to keep this secret well guarded? Well, I also know once it gets out that Butler will continue to dazzle while letting everyone continue to feel like they are in the comfort of their own living room.

I also recommend checking out Butler’s solo debut from late 2009, Lately Here Though, which is a well produced example of his completely original gift of writing simple, yet heartfelt messages that cut deep on so many levels.

So here are a few choice selctions that I highly recommend checking out and putting on your iPod, where I’m willing to bet they will stay for a very, very long time like a soundtrack to a cool summer breeze. So please, sit back and enjoy some samplings of a man affectionately known as Brock, and remember when he cracks a joke, that it’s a good bet that “The Butler did it…”
