Pullin’ ‘Tubes: The Strokes Are Back

Of the acts that made our list of bands we’re excited about in 2011, the one that had me most intrigued was The Strokes – who were looking to return to the limelight after what the group dubbed a “much needed hibernation period”. The hiatus was both cathartic and productive, as we got excellent solo releases from four-fifths of the NYC-based act. Following nearly three years apart, Julian Casablancas & Co. regrouped and headed into the studio to record their fourth studio album, and first since 2006’s First Impressions of Earth. After two years in the making and numerous delays, The Strokes will finally release Angles on March 22.

If there were thoughts that the extended break would have ill effects on the band and its modernized Velvet Underground influenced sound, The Strokes put the kibosh on that when we finally got to hear what they had been toiling away in the studio working on via a free giveaway of the album’s first single, Under Cover Of Darkness. This past weekend, the band made its official public return with its third appearance on Saturday Night Live. After watching the performance, we’re happy to say that we can finally declare The Strokes are officially back. Check it out for yourself…

The Strokes will celebrate the release of its latest album with a monster sold out hometown gig at Madison Square Garden on April 1, and will also be among the headliners at Bonnaroo X this June.
