Allman Brothers Band @ the Beacon: Night Nine – Brecker and The Juke Horns

One element that has been missing from the Allman Brothers Band March Madness run at the Beacon were horns. The Juke Horns are a Beacon run staple and finally made their presence felt last night in a big way.

The first set of last night’s show offered a wide variety of original material leading up to a cover of Elmore James’ blues classic The Sky Is Crying. One of the night’s more interesting moments came towards the end of the set when Gregg Allman led the band through a horn-heavy take on Bobby Blue Bland’s Ain’t No Love In The Heart of The City backed by The Juke Horns. The horns stayed out for the set-closing Stand Back.

Grammy winning jazz trumpeter Randy Brecker has performed with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Parliment-Funkadelic, Steely Dan, Frank Zappa and Jaco Pastorius. Brecker’s memorable sit in with the Brothers during the band’s 40th Anniversary celebration in 2009 was still fresh in fans’ minds when the trumpeter came out at the start of set two. A transcendent jam on Miles Davis’ Spanish Key kicked things off leading into a slow-burning Desdemona.

In Memory of Elizabeth Reed gave the musicians a chance to stretch out before Brecker gave way to the Juke Horns for covers of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Into The Mystic. For the encore, both Brecker and The Juke Horns took turns soloing throughout Southbound. The Allman Brothers Band returns to the Beacon and Moogis.com tonight.
