Last Night: Furthur Covers Clash / PGroove Welcomes Molitz / Col. Bruce w/ Allmans

Friday was quite a night for three HT faves in NYC as Furthur performed at Radio City Music Hall, Perpetual Groove rocked a sold-out Brooklyn Bowl and the Allman Brothers Band played their penultimate show at the Beacon.

After five shows at the Best Buy earlier this month, Furthur came back to the Big Apple last night for the first of three shows at Radio City. Ever think you’d hear members of the Grateful Dead cover punk legends The Clash? Well that’s exactly what happened as Furthur debuted a take on Train In Vain during the first set. Bob Weir handled vocals and John Kadlecik threw in “Jerry licks” on the hidden track from London Calling. Take a look…

Down in Brooklyn, Perpetual Groove impressively sold out the Brooklyn Bowl and engaged the audience throughout the night with hearty jams, especially during the four-song second set. Particle keyboardist Steve Molitz, who sat in with the Allman Brothers Band and Furthur earlier this month, emerged in Robot Waltz to throw down a memorable solo on PGroove guitarist Brock Butler’s Moog. Highlights included a perfect rendition of Cover Wars March Madness Elite 8 contender Live and Let Die, a near 15-minute version of At The Screen and the first-ever Crowded Tub encore.

Finally, uptown at the Beacon, the Allman Brothers Band still had a few tricks up their sleeves for the next-to-last March Madness show at the Beacon. Col. Bruce Hampton and Duane Trucks sat in on Turn On Your Lovelight towards the end of the first set, while Susan Tedeschi and Israeli guitarist Oz Noy came out during the second set. Noy teamed up with ABB guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks to deliver a relentless Liz Reed, while Tedeschi sang a version of Anyday that segued into a delicious Blue Sky instrumental jam and back. An interesting moment came during the encore, when the Brothers offered a new arrangement of Van Morrison’s Into The Mystic that featured a nice call and response segment between Derek and Warren.
