Grateful Dead/Furthur bassist Phil Lesh has revealed his plan to create a music venue in Marin County called Terrapin Landing where he will host concerts while off the road. Here’s Phil’s take via the Furthur.net forum…
We’re taking the first steps to make a long time dream- a permanent musical home – come true. We are purchasing a building in Marin, and plan on remodeling it to feel like an old barn; we ‘re calling it Terrapin Landing. We will continue with Furthur while making music at Terrapin Landing when we are at home.
The music will be varied, featuring:
Phil Lesh & Friends (continuing the tradition of revolving lineups, including old as well as new friends)
West Coast Rambles, based on (and blessed by) Levon Helm’s historic Rambles
Album night – we pick a favorite album or two to play live
Telstar night- we put together a band for free form improvisation
Sing-alongs to monthly Sunday morning gospel music
Trivia nights
Monthly big band night
Seminars with local musicians and artists
Our goal is to create a vibrant community gathering place: beautiful, comfortable, welcoming – for members of the community to commingle and enjoy good music.
– Phil

The bassist recently celebrated his 71st birthday and following in Levon Helm’s footsteps by bringing the audience to his “musical home” seems like a wise decision. We’re also excited to read that Lesh plans on reviving his currently dormant Phil Lesh & Friends project and look forward to seeing who he will perform with and what albums they would cover. Phil’s GD/Furthur band mate Bob Weir recently opened a studio of his own in Marin, Tamalpais Research Institute, where he plans to host webcasts. Clearly, these guys are planning for life “after the road.”
Now, before we get ahead of ourselves, it seems there’s still a ways to go before Terrapin Landing opens. Lesh mentions his plan for the venue is in “the first steps” phase. You’ll recall that the Dead once put out a CD release called Terrapin Station to raise funds for “an interactive museum, sensory playground, and social/cultural laboratory” that the band was planning to open. That release came out in 1998 and 13 years later barely another word was spoken about the planned Terrapin Station. We’ll keep you posted on any updates about this exciting venture.

Great, now I have to move to California.
ditto ^ hehe
Terrapin Station was released on July 27, 1977.
The Terrapin Station CD referred to above is the Capital Centre show, Landover MD 3-15-1990.
Monies generated from the sale of this CD (called Terrapin Station) was to benefit the Terrapin Station project that never developed.
these amazing musicians continue their dream and journey where the soul and wind meet to complete an unbroken chain.
hopefully life after the road will not be for a long time
Already on the way here.
