New My Morning Jacket: Octoplasm

Back in the early part of this century My Morning Jacket was often labeled a jamband by critics and bloggers, but we never quite saw them in the same musical family as Phish and the Grateful Dead. We may have to reconsider our previous notion now that the band has put out Octoplasm, a noodle-heavy jam that sounds like it could segue into Dark Star or China Cat Sunflower at any point within the six-minute track.

Octoplasm, which you can stream over at Antiquiet, is the first release from the Kentucky-based band’s Self-Hypnosis series, which is available to those who pay $29.99 to join Roll Call – the MMJ fan club. Roll Call members also get access to a members only site that launches this summer, first dibs on pre-sales, a welcome package and a special will-call line for some shows. Here’s an explanation of the Self-Hypnosis series from MMJ…

The Self-Hypnosis Series will begin an exploration into the core of each individual heart, mind, body, and soul that joins the Roll Call fan club. Based on a desire to help each individual fan reach a state of emotional bliss, a new algorithm was recently developed at Removador HQ. It can sense listeners temperature and emotional climate at the time of listening-thru any listening device, be it speakers or headphones, and cater a listening experience truly unique for each listener. MMJ will carefully handcraft and carve pieces of music that will provide a vehicle for the listener to enter a new gateway of self exploration and understanding based on their current state of mind at the time of each listen. The Self-Hypnosis Series will start with a piece entitled “Octoplasm” which will be available via download immediately upon joining Roll Call. New titles in the Self-Hypnosis series will appear randomly, or on a strict schedule and will be available only to Roll Call members. We hope you are to enjoy!

Okay, while the description lost us along the way, our inner hippies have gravitated towards the loose, jammy feel of Octoplasm and if the Self-Hypnosis series means we’ll get to hear more tracks like this, consider us fans.

  1. Great track both of the new songs show lots of promise and sound pretty much better than any thing off of Evil Urges.

I can’t wait for some more tour dates.
