Stormy Mondays: Acoustic Mix Vol. VIII

Memorial Day weekend is coming up and that means it’s time for Volume VIII in the ever popular Stormy Monday Acoustic Mix series. This time around we open with an early Surprise Me Mr. Davis performance of Rolling Home back when the band was a folksier offshoot of The Slip rather than the Americana rockers they are today. Following that is SM favorite Brian Blade out from behind the kit and toting an acoustic guitar in his singer/songwriter incarnation doing Mercy Angel. If you haven’t heard his Mama Rosa album, featuring Daniel Lanois, do yourself a favor, and if you get a chance to see a rare gig in this format, don’t you dare miss it. He is a musical force of nature.

The Low Anthem gives their dense, tragic rendition of Sally Where’d You Get Your Liquor From, and The Mother Hips lighten the mood a bit with Singing Seems to Ease Me. (The Hips new live album Do It On The Strings is fantastic, and it’s nice to see them hitting some east coast festivals this summer.) Next is my favorite of the many versions of Dylan’s Mississippi and some classic Jorma and Jack with Mann’s Fate, an underappreciated instrumental to my ears. Finally, we have Neil Young and some friends doing a mostly acoustic version of Helpless. It’s warm, wooden music just right for traveling, grilling or just savoring the weekend. As always, enjoy!
