Review: Panic On The Rocks

Jaded Tourist gave way to what were far and away the best moments of the entire night. As Herring melodically soloed over Tortured Artist, he found his way directly into the cold springs of Chilly Water, which became a scorching roller coaster, almost heavy metal at times, but never lost the ferocity of the fight. At one point they found a very similar build-up to Phish’s Tweezer Reprise, later a funk fest of a keyboard and drum duel and a siren-scream from Herring. Schools drowned a bass groove that fell into Arlene, and again they rode on.

Drums, apparently, is always a good excuse to catch up with whatever’s been going on in your neighbor’s head, but soon attention was back on stage through Vacation and Impossible. The set ended on a very loud Action Man, fittingly titled for this edition. The three-song encore, Up All Night, Bust it Big and a cover of Neil Young’s Mr. Soul ended the night on a mellow note, but despite the slowed pace, the crowd remained through until the end.

Even though it took them a while to settle in, the rest of the show was straight fire once they did. There was some anger behind their music, it seemed to drive them. But once they got that anger out, they had fun and found the energy they needed to take over.
