Phish Gorge Setlist & Skinny: Night Two

For the second set, Phish went with an old school approach as the newest original performed was Sand, which was debuted at The Gorge nearly 12 years ago. A typically high-energy romp through Chalk Dust set the tone for the second stanza. Tweezer came next and quickly found Anastasio and Page McConnell working funk overtones into the mix. Following a few big rock releases, the jam slowed its pace and had more of an ambient feel before dissolving into Prince Caspian. Caspian eventually found its way into the aforementioned Sand for a nice Rhodes workout by Page and one rapid-fire, melodic riff after another from Trey.

One of the more interesting moments of the night developed out of Sand, when Anastasio landed on main Tweezer melody and all his band mates followed suit. The impressive return to Tweezer is worth an immediate listen. Phish toyed with the tempo of the Tweezer melody, meandering into space and then an uneventful Birds of a Feather. Waste capably filled the ballad slot and surprisingly segued into a cover of Golden Age by TV on the Radio. There wasn’t much jamming in tonight’s Golden Age; all of the sudden Reba came out of nowhere for a rare, late second set take on the classic tune. Just as they did at Super Ball IX, the quartet attempted the whistling bit at the end of Reba and just as they did in Watkins Glen they botched it. A fierce, frenetic Antelope closed the set and contained well-executed Golden Age, Sand, Tweezer and Reba teases sprinkled in. A perfunctory Suzy Greenberg, Tweezer Reprise encore would’ve put an end to The Gorge ’11 run, if the band didn’t have one more trick up their sleeves. Suzy was followed by the only the 12th Sanity since 1993.

Phish returns to the stage Monday night at Hollywood Bowl for their first-ever performance at the iconic venue. We’ll have a full review and photo set from The Gorge soon.
