Friday Mix Tape: Fresh Fall Music

Hope everyone had a great Turkey Day complete with the three F’s: family, food and football. For this week’s mix tape, we aim to keep the autumn buzz going by highlighting some great new music off some of this fall’s best new releases. Some of these artists have caught on in a hurry like Youth Lagoon and M83, while others remain under the radar such as Little Silver and Tyler Ramsey. The rest, namely Primus and Goat Rodeo, are masters of their craft.

Band of Horses fans will recognize the name Tyler Ramsey as the band’s lead guitarist, but as evidenced by the title track on display here, Ramsey’s recent solo release The Valley Wind sounds more like a good Neil Young album. Next, we have the energetic indie pop of Midnight City from the buzzy French act M83 off their new one, Hurry Up We’re Dreaming. From there, it’s the funky new Primus single Tragedy’s A Comin’ off Green Naugahyde. If you haven’t spent any time with the Primus album yet, it’s a fantastic album to put some high-end headphones to use.

Next, it’s the steady building song Posters off the highly acclaimed debut from Youth Lagoon, The Year of Hibernation. Take a listen to the segment around 2:20 when the rhythm track kicks to get the blood flowing. Little Silver is a duo that caught our attention with a cool new video for Stolen Souvenir, the title track off their recent EP. Finally, we have the Goat Rodeo Sessions, which brings together a group of world class musicians including Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Chris Thile to mesh classical music and bluegrass in their own intricate style with 13:8.
