Get Yer Mikes Here: 1 for $3, 2 for $5

Umphrey’s McGee, known for its innovation in spreading the music and the gospel, has a new one for you. If you’re a taper and you circulate the show, they’ll let you in for free. You think I’m fucking with you? I am not fucking with you.

UM

UM today issued its new taping and photography policy, and here’s the important paragraph among the 403-page notarized document:

Umphrey’s McGee will be offering a limited number of complimentary tickets to audience tapers, on a case by case basis. The taper must agree to make an attempt to distribute his recording in exchange for the ticket. Tapers must contact Umphrey’s at least 48 hours in advance of the show in order to participate in this new program. If interested, or for more information, please contact [email protected].

The number of tapers has clearly dwindled as a growing majority of bands offer reasonably priced soundboard recordings so soon after the shows. Hopefully UM’s attitude and new policy will rub off on other bands, for I know I would never have heard of bands like Phish and UM if it not for the tapers.

For the photogs, the band only banned professional setups, unlike those anti-freedom communists at moe. who don’t allow any fan photography. Buying a moe. ticket now is basically like standing in a bread line, if you ask me. So let’s hear it for Umphrey’s McGee and its effort to make the music more accessible to fans like us.

Umphrey’s plays Tulsa, Oklahoma tonight before heading to Texas for the weekend. For those unable to attend, here’s a recently recorded show from the Fox Theater in Boulder that’s available for both streaming and download…
