Friday Mix Tape: The Women of Indie Rock (2011)

Depending on your definition of “Indie”, maybe some of the artists listed in today’s mix tape won’t fit the description for you. Regardless of genre classification, it’s been a great year for new music and there is no shortage of interesting female musicians in the pack – let’s have a listen to six great cuts.

Leading off we have Merrill Garbus aka tUnE-yArDs with Gangsta from her album W H O K I L L which has been doing quite well in year-end lists. Maybe you don’t consider Feist to be especially Indie, but this track The Bad In Each Other is sure to get stuck in your head with its smooth guitar line and hypnotic vocal melody. Speaking of melodies that stick with you for days, the chorus of St. Vincent’s Cheerleader is another one. Eleanor Friedberger of Fiery Furnaces celebrated her debut album this year and we listen to the track Inn of the Seventh Ray. Lykke Li bats fifth with I Follow Rivers from her album Wounded Rhymes. And to close, Danger Mouse & Danielle Luppi’s Rome features a lot of both Jack White and Norah Jones, we of course have one of the tracks from Norah to finish out the playlist with Season’s Trees.

Adele, we would have included you if we could stream your songs on Grooveshark.
