My Morning Jacket Opens European Tour and The Spontaneous Curation Series at Azkena Rock Fest in Spain

HT faves My Morning Jacket kicked off their European Tour on Saturday night with a set at the Azkena Rock festival in Mendizabala, Spain. The show also marked the beginning of the band’s Spontaneous Curation Series in which fans help determine each night’s setlist.

While the first setlist of the tour didn’t get too crazy, it was well paced and nine out of the 11 songs played were requested through Twitter. The set started with Lay Low, a suggestion from a member of the group’s message board, and a tune that usually sees action much later in MMJ’s set. The same can be said of the set’s second song, One Big Holiday, perhaps the Kentucky-based band’s most well known tune, which often closes their performances. Other requests honored on this night were live staples Gideon, Dondante, Smokin’ From Shootin’, The Day Is Coming, Wordless Chorus and Mahgeetah. Holding on to Black Metal and Victory Dance were the only songs played that weren’t requested via Twitter or the message board.
