Kris Delmhorst is a folk-pop singer-songwriter based in Cambridge, MA, but originally from Brooklyn. Through varied life experiences involving farming, arts, studying the fiddle in Ireland, and spending some time at sea, she has built a career as a multi-talented artist. Still, her popularity and success have been primarily achieved through word-of-mouth, as her solid live performances, energy, and a smooth, sensuous voice have garnered her praise that keeps fans coming back for more.
Her most recent album,
Songs for a Hurricane, is her third recording, and, like her last effort, produced by Billy Conway (of Morphine fame) at Hi-n-Dry Studio in hometown Cambridge. As the title depicts, the songs flow similar to a storm, starting off slow, picking up speed, and then ending quietly. Her strong voice and distinct songwriting are evident throughout, as she moves through a diverse array of tunes, which range from the blues/grassy “East of the Mountains,” to a frantic “Weathervane” (which is probably the high point of the album), and a slow and deliberate “Mingalay.” Delmhorst is always a constant focal point, though her various lead guitarists used in the recordings deepen the eclectic sounds.
Hurricane is a strong album from an up-and-coming singer sure to make her mark. And if she continues with this path, the success she’s built through word-of-mouth is sure to grow.
