The Brindley Brothers are an alt-pop-rock band from the D.C. area, featuring guitarist-singer/songwriter Luke Brindley, who has been on the scene for some time, and his brother Daniel on keys and backing vocals. Playing With The Light is the first album by the duo, released back in January.
A compilation of nine tunes that deal with many of the social issues that have impacted the D.C. area over the past few years, the album starts off slowly as the band makes a somewhat successful attempt at reproducing the Wallflowers sound. Only by the mid-point do we see them really stretch their legs, with “Supernova” and “Evergreen,” two rocking tunes that show the band’s teeth. The “Breakdown” finale brings it back around, showcasing the soulful side.
It’s a good album with plenty of high points, but at times leaves you wondering about the direction they are trying to grow in. What it does show is, if they apply their efforts in the right areas, their talent can take them wherever they would like to go.
