Oooohhhh yeeeeaaahhhh… Conjuring memories that land somewhere between Alice Cooper and The Cult, I’m starting to fall in love with this record. That’s to say it’s not music that can be fully appreciated when recorded to compact disc or played live in a dingy dive bar. The songs on Snake in the Grass (Captiva Records) are glorious- and they’re arena ready, bitch. I see disposable Bic salutes in the night and a sea of swaying bodies singing along. Oh yeah, there are PSA’s not so subliminally embedded in the lyrics (“The best government governs the least / we’re trading freedom for the Mark of The Beast”) and arrangements (Take cover during the air raid guitar intro of “True Born Leader”).
Politically motivated Woodstock rock- just now, we’re not hugging trees- we’re throwing logs on the fire- the one that fuels the spotlight exposing the running colors of this tyrannical administration and that crooked corporate direction. Simple, straight ahead rock anchored by a rhythm section ready for a brawl, (lead singer / guitarist) Adam Musick’s honest lyrics and wife Wendy’s hair slinging guitar stylings.
When it all hits the fan and we’re falling all over ourselves defecting to Canada, turn “Free Man Now” (or “Cold Blooded”, or “Come On”, or…) to 10. Gas up the early model (never fading, always fierce) Ford Bronco, lose control and point north. Lay a scratch through the red clay with patches of grass and gravel in your front yard- let those tire tracks and loose dirt divots be the only things you leave behind.
