Part of the new “Classic Albums” series, this DVD takes a look at the recording of the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s amazing album, Electric Ladyland, by means of photos, archival footage, outtakes, interviews with surviving members of the band and other players, producers and engineers.
However, produced for the average VH1-watcher, instead of getting a deep look into some of the new ground we are repeatedly told Hendrix was breaking, we just get a lot of gushing, a few amusing anecdotes and a couple of bitter memories. By far the most informative and entertaining portions are when engineer Eddie Kramer strips down the tracks on certain songs, peeling back and re-applying the lush layers of the album, but there is certainly not enough of this to please a die-hard music fan or gearhead. But the completist Jimi Hendrix fan will no doubt find it an indispensable watch.
