It’s time to break out another band from the up and coming/next big thing buzz bin. This time it’s brother sister time as The Magic Numbers - made up of Romeo and Michele Stodart and Angelina and Sean Gannon - remind us plain looking folks, that you don’t need to be covered in high gloss to make near perfect pop music. The pudgy four piece nails the art of raw pop, with their soothing/pick-me up harmonies on their self-titled debut.
The Magic Numbers flood their CD time with catchy short numbers about love in all it’s forms- finding love, digging love, hating love and just plain being in love. If that doesn’t shine on the bright side enough for you, try the 60’s doo-wop on the opener “Mornings Eleven,” which isn’t the first of the “ooohs and ahhs,” you’ll hear. “Forever Lost” is the epitome of indie pop, with its stop go harmonies and the band’s secret weapon – the melodica. There is even some zesty guitar work in “The Mule” and Sean's steady/sweeping drum work throughout to give the sure fire harmonies from Michele and Angela a snap of punk beef. Although lead singer Romeo Stodart sounds enough like John Popper to force a double take, after track two you’ll realize The Magic Numbers are simply unique. Although the band hits borderline bubblegum territory, there is enough juice in this shiny package to make The Magic Numbers more than just a quick bubble ready to burst.
