On Eudemonic, the first studio release from the Steve Kimock Band, a relaxed rolling groove on the opening track “Eudemon” starts things off as Steve Kimock delivers what he has become known for - smooth, clear guitar lines, with an unmistakable tone. The second track, the live staple, “Ice Cream Man”, is the strongest song on the disc and it continues those clear uncluttered lines and possesses a Grateful Dead feel. The seven remaining tracks on Eudomonic follows in much the same way, as it is a well-polished album, but it does not quite reach the claims of the band to create “New Dimensions in Instrumental Rock.”
Kimock and longtime drummer, Rodney Holmes, create an album that invokes many musical styles, and provides the listener with an interesting journey that is led by Kimock’s easily identifiable guitar. It is an album to listen to with headphones on, so that one can crawl into the nuances of each song, hear each string as it is strummed and then let each note bounce around in your head.
Kimock says, “That one of my goals is to keep people from reaching into a bag of labels to describe our music.” By throwing in hints of a wide range of musical styles and keeping Kimock’s definitive guitar tone at the center of their music, the Steve Kimock Band creates their own label with which to be described by, and that is exactly what they do on Eudemonic…they sound like the Steve Kimock Band.
