John Ellis

 One Foot In The Swamp

John Ellis, well-known as the saxophonist for the Charlie Hunter band, finally issued his first solo album this past spring. Joined by John Scofield, Nicolas Payton, Jason Marsalis and others, he has put together a formidable group to wrap some improvisational jazz around. And while the album was recorded in NYC, and released on the city’s indie label, Hyena, many of his influences and time has been spent in New Orleans; one hopes all is well with his family and friends.

One Foot In The Swamp, beginning to end, speaks of originality, with all but two tracks composed by Ellis. Each selection emphasizes a different tone, ranging from gritty blues to contemporary smooth, giving the appearance that Ellis has been building up some creativity for quite some time, and this has become his outlet. And he does a good job mixing in his supporting cast without muddying up the sound.

It’s a solid effort from one of the great saxophonists on the scene today. It’s versatile enough to be enjoyed at low-key gathering or home alone in a relaxation mode. Hopefully this will be one of many.
