When’s funk going to make a comeback? I’m not talking about the acid-head, wild, experimental/Funkadelic type stuff; I mean that straight up sophisticated, intricate breakbeat style funk found on James Brown classics like “Funky President”. We can only wait and see if the mainstream will ever come to its senses, but until then, LA based live funk band, the Breakestra are keeping the dream alive with their new album entitled Hit The Floor.
The Breakestra crew’s sophomore full length is filled with classic funk inspired breakbeats. Highlights found on
Hit The Floor include a couple more soulful and completely out of sight tracks like “Hiding” and “Recognize”. The Breakestra channel their obvious love of funk influenced old school hip hop with an off the hook collabo “Family Rap” featuring Jurassic Park and People Under the Stairs emcees Charli2na, Soup, and Double K.
Aside from the fresh variety of tightly produced lyrically driven songs from legendary party emcee and vocalist Mixmaster Wolf—you’ll also find a nice selection of air tight instrumental jams like “Burgundy Blues,” “Sunny Delight,” and “See Sawing,” that fully showcase the crew’s insane musical skill and abilities.
On the opening track “Stand Up,” Mixmaster Wolf shouts out, “You look like you’re afraid of the dance floor or something!” The Breakestra always gets things jumping off; throw this record on and you’re guaranteed to get the party started.
