Koufax

 Hard Times Are in Fashion

Um, don’t these guys have some friends to take them aside in the studio and say, “Uh, dude, the Strokes sound was old when the Strokes did it.” The first track, “Why Even Bother,” is appropriately titled 'cause you’ve heard this all before.

With fuzzy guitars, straining megaphone vocals, and straightforward careening tempos, they hit all the stops, but they need to get off the train. Even when you ignore the music and just listen to the lyrics, you hear songs full of questions and cold comfort advice to some ex-girlfriend. This is garage-rock-lite.

If hard times are in fashion, this album is designed to make Koufax as fashionable as possible. But then again, some people like the comfort of hearing the same old thing over and over.

If you're really in the mood for this kind of thing, do yourself a favor and put in “Is This It?” Or even better, put in some Television, Velvet Underground or Stooges.
