Newly anointed kings of the Seattle indie pop scene, Band of Horses already have a lot to live up to – and they’ve only just put out their debut album, Everything All The Time. Indeed, the band is so new they have yet to fully establish their website, linking instead from their front page to their page on Seattle label sub pop. Yet, their sound is both world-worn and knowing.
Composed of Ben Bridwell and Mat Brooke, formerly of Seattle indie outfit Carissa’s Wierd, Band of Horses is already in regular rotation on Seattle radio stalwart KEXP. And indeed, Band of Horses seems already on the way to eclipsing their former band. Quickly drawing easy comparisons to The Shins, Band of Horses don’t offer a significantly new sound. Rather, they offer comfortingly beautiful music, with excellent melodies, captivatingly soaring vocals, and solid riffs. With the odd banjo and some tawngy guitar mixed in, the imagination conjures images of a younger Neil Young with touches of Southern roots mixing happily with epic, soaring melodies. In short, Band of Horses is, so far, living up to the hype – and well worth checking out.
