Yonder Mountain String Band has pushed the boundaries of bluegrass since their inception with their distinct brand of high energy mountain music. On their latest self-titled album, they stretch the limits even more while offering one of the most accessible bluegrass albums to date. Enlisting the help of renowned rock producer, Tom Rothrock, this time Yonder veers off the traditional path by adding percussion on two tracks, but it’s done in a subtle way that accents their playing, while not disrupting their original sound.
Tight harmonies and hot picking shine on “Sidewalk Stars.” Jeff Austin’s lonesome vocals on the Benny Galloway penned number, “I Ain’t Been Myself in Years,” are a notable highlight. Dave Johnston takes the forefront on several tracks lending his banjo, vocals, and even guitar, particularly on “Winds on Fire” an immediate standout. Adam Aijala’s quick flat-picking shows up on the fast moving “Night Out” and Ben Kaufmann takes lead vocals on “How ‘bout You?” which features drums and electric guitar in one of their most infectious songs to date. But the centerpiece of the record is “Classic Situation,” with an irresistible hook that will have you humming for days.
This may not bring Yonder - or bluegrass as a whole for that matter - to household name status, but it’s another step in that direction.
