Red alert!! This is an album composed by a husband and wife duo, containing ten tracks that are all about the heartbreak of splitting up. Whoa!! Come back, it isn’t all that bad. The Submarines – Declare A New State has been lovingly constructed by the now intimate duo of John Dragonetti &Blake Hazard (cool names or what?)
The album consists of the couples alternating points of view after the detachment of a loved one, given from a male and female point of view. The first track, “Peace &Hate,” is quite a rousing little number and is the only selection where vocal duties are shared between both spouses. The honors are then taken individually on the following tracks, distancing the two subjects in opposite realms.
Initially the record as a whole may appear a bit too upbeat to translate the raw emotion of a torn relationship, but when it takes hold, it's a damn good album. Each song serves a greater purpose, with the acoustic veins and beautiful strings the order of the day. Instrument arrangements and sonic elements add just the right backdrop.
It's a record you can return to again and again. And not just 'cause you’re in heartbreak mode - it's simply a collection of ten great compositions.
