Delaney & Bonnie

Put out on the Stax label, the re-release of Home expectedly involves an authentic, rough-and-tumble feel. Invariably that “Stax sound” is prevalent, as Booker T. and the MG’s and Isaac Hayes back the duo, while Donald “Duck” Dunn of the Mar-Keys lends basslines (as well as playing producer). After all these years, it's such a blending of rock, country, soul, and blues that it's almost a parody of itself. The culmination gives it a pop flavor, with a subtle Motown vibe. Not surprising, since several songs (like “My Baby Specializes”) include Ben Cauley, the only surviving passenger from the plane crash that killed Otis Redding.

The then-married Bramlett couple (whose individual credits are astounding in themselves) bring to mind the likes of Ike and Tina (with whom Bonnie performed) mixed with a Sonny and Cher (that pop sound) underlying theme. But the highlight here is Bonnie’s soulful rendition of “Piece of My Heart.” The semblance of recordings on this re-release is a time-slice of music history featuring then - and future - heavyweights and icons.
