The latest album from Indigenous features a new lineup and a new label, but what hasn’t changed is Mato Nanji leading the charge. The Nakota tribe of South Dakota is the least assuming of places to find a hard-charging electric blues band, but that’s what has been resonating from the region since 1998.
With influences on his sleeve ranging from such greats as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Cray, Jimi Hendrix, and Freddie King, you know you’re going to get some pretty heavy blues - and that’s exactly what you get from Chasing The Sun. “Runaway” gets things going at a frenetic rock pace, while the gritty instrumental “Out of Nowhere” gravitates towards pure Stevie. When the growling vocals come rearing out, you even hear a little Big Head Todd in there as well. The middle of the album features a few slower paced tunes that would have been better served dispersed throughout the album instead of lumped together, but otherwise this is a solid addition to the blues guitar portion of your record collection.
