Seattle’s KEXP (90.3 FM) is one of the most popular public radio stations in the country, and for good reason. This listener-supported gem spins an even more eclectic mix of intellectually-driven tunes – with a particular fondness for indie rock – than most other like-minded stops along the dial. The progressive programming and the continuous breaking of new artists has solidified both a terrestrial and online listening audience that respond with intense loyalty. This latest collection, which boasts tracks from as broad a range as Sleater-Kinney to Bright Eyes and Drive-By Truckers to Lyrics Born, is a good introduction for the uninitiated - and a great way to donate to the best in listener supported radio. The inclusion of Patti Smith (accompanied here by Lenny Kaye) suggests what devotees already know: the thick common thread that binds is a shared love of creation. These artists, like many championed by KEXP, make music for the passion of the process, not the profit. Tune in, there’s much to be learned.
