This year the Texas-based band Centro-Matic celebrates their tenth anniversary, and does so with the release of a brand new album. Typically a milestone of that stature would lend itself to a "greatest hits collection,” but with Centro-Matic, it's just back to work. Fort Recovery, their latest effort (and their second for Misra Records) captures the essence of decade old band still playing at it's very best.
Everything from Will Johnson’s smoky drawl and straight-at-you lyrics, to the expanded instrumentation, each nuance is well placed and appropriate, leaving the listener with a full and cohesive album. In the vein of past works, its more of their alt-country, slow burning rock, notably captured on the midtempo opening tracks (“Covered Up In Mines,” “Calling Thermatico”), and the sublime ballad, “I See Through You.” While the fuzzed out guitars can get a little overpowering at times, the melodies will be stuck in your head for weeks.
