While reminiscent of some of the more widely known musical greats in the acoustic/folk-pop realm, Brett Dennen’s true-to-life lyrics and warm guitar riffs are astonishingly original. With an artistic vision cultivated in his home-schooled days in the small gold rush town of Oakdale, California, Dennen had room to grow and flourish without the conformities of his peers. Teaching himself guitar at the age of twelve, the result is a channeling of worldly influences that span many genres and timeless themes.
His sophomore album, (first for Dualtone) So Much More, blends overtures that strike a similar chord to Gustavo Santaollala’s western ballads from Brokeback Mountain alongside primal back-beats similar to Paul Simon’s Graceland. “I Asked When” and “Someday” bathe in reggae warmth, under lyrics of political unrest and warfare, while Bob Marley emerges in the feel-good melodies of “Someday.” Changing pace once again, he woos you with “She’s Mine” and “Because You Are a Woman,” where his sexy, soulful voice and ardent lyrics close in on Maroon 5 territory -- minus the saturated pop.
Brett Dennen’s versatility in both
songwriting and
musicianship are well beyond his years. The music and the message is one of love and peace…honestly and authentically.
So Much More lives up to its word.
