My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless remains a throw-in as an indie-rock masterpiece to this very day, despite its bygone early 90’s “shoegazing” era status. The dream-like haze has returned courtesy of Silversun Pickups, in a world where The Pixies and The Smashing Pumpkins show they had an influence on somebody, even if they were looking at their Chuck Taylors while stumming. Fifteen years later, that distorted landscape suddenly sounds novel on this LA quartet’s debut – Carnavas.
If the hard rocking glam of “Well Thought out Twinkies” isn’t enough to hook you in, try the buzzing frenzy of “Future Foe Scenarios” which is better played LOUD. The radio friendly “Lazy Eye” is bound to be a pop keeper with its hush vocals and mellow vibe. Frontman Brian Daubert along with vocalist Nikki Monninger make it hard to hold off on comparisons to the pre-mentioned bands, with their lush leads.
Although the Silversuns are a work in progress and its hard to define if this sort of “shoegazing” will be their forever trademark, Carnavas plays like a young band at the verge. But unlike most buzz bands whose best days have come and gone by yesteday’s blog posting, The Silversuns seem to have that silver lining of controlled anguish that will propel them as recording semi-giants.
