Two decades after helping define the sound of alternative-rock with Husker Du, Bob Mould could help redefine the sound of pop itself as part of an unusual partnership with progressive house wizard and Deep Dish-collaborator Richard Morel. Named after an ultimate fight in pro-wrestling and drawing from Mould’s days as a writer for the WCW, Blowoff has created an Ultimate Smackdown-type of album. With a light touch and in less than 55 minutes, Blowoff takes down today’s dance-rock welterweights, leaving listeners enthralled.
When Mould’s angry, angular power-pop tendencies meet Morel’s hazy house-fueled electronica, the result is a club-ready but surprisingly sunny, straightforward pop sound that has no like or parallel today.
The partnership between Mould and Morel is an uncommon one in today’s pop scene; not simply because it’s a Scissor Sisters-style union between a rocker and a house-head, with universal musical appeal. Even more uncommon is its merger between two independent-minded singer-songwriters. Blowoff is a total 50/50 collaboration.
