Respond II

This rare gem of a compilation CD not only showcases the talents of female performers from Joan Baez to Aimee Mann, and crosses genres from punk to bluegrass, but the proceeds benefit families who have been affected by domestic violence. Continuing where 1999’s Respond left off; the powerful, all-female lineup alone makes this double-disc album worth a listen. You’ll soon be hooked. Consisting of previously released and unreleased songs that run the gamut from Angélique Kidjo’s Latin, spicy, and dance inspiring "Tumba", to the more somber "Witness" by Sarah McLachlan, and the nostalgic favorite "Luka" by Suzanne Vega.

It’s amazing to have all of these ultra-talented women on one surprisingly cohesive album. The different music genres blend well together and there is just enough mix of each music type to keep the listener riveted. The album also serves to introduce new talented female artists, which I’m always looking out for, such as Ely Guerra, whose "Yo No" is one of my favorite songs from the album, and Toshi Reagon‘s "Mountain Top", another stellar effort. Not to mention the other amazing 32 (!) songs on the album. Not considering myself a country music fan, I even found myself loving Rachael Davis’ "Lonely When You’re Gone".

If you are interested in quality music, this album is a necessary addition to your music library. It is already one of my favorites.

Respond II, created and produced completely by volunteers, donates all proceeds to RESPOND, Inc. and the Family Violence Prevention Fund (FVPF); two non-profit organizations working to end domestic violence in the United States and around the world.

Since 1974, RESPOND, Inc. has been working to end domestic violence. RESPOND sees domestic violence as a human rights issue. The agency’s mission is to help women free themselves and their children from abusive situations, to empower survivors of domestic violence to advocate for themselves and their children and to engage in preventative activities that lessen the incidence of violence. RESPOND serves thousands of women each year through its 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, safe home program, individual and group counseling sessions, children’s services and outreach, including a teen dating violence intervention program.

The Family Violence Prevention Fund (FVPF) is a national non-profit organization working to end domestic violence and help children whose lives are devastated by abuse. FVPF organizes individuals, children’s groups and social justice organizations for internationally recognized public education/prevention campaigns, policy reform, and advocacy programs. Based in San Francisco, FVPF also has offices in Washington, D.C. and Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.
