Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton

Knives Don't Have Your Back

By Josh Cox

The latest in the string of Broken Social Scene satellite sirens to splinter forth from the fold into solo album orbit, Haines takes the restrained red velvet torch singer route previously trod by Leslie Feist, with less than successful results.  Piano-based, spare, and somber, Haines aims for a mood she never quite captures, due in no small part to the limitations of her voice.  Her lyrical acumen is equally troublesome; the phrase “bros before hos” shows up twice in “The Maid Needs A Maid.”  Suffused with lassitude, one song drifts into the next, a sleepy trajectory broken up nicely by a brass flourish in “Mostly Waving.”
