Brian Eno

77 Million Paintings

Legendary musician and producer Brian Eno's 77 Million Paintings is being marketed as the visual expansion of his pioneering work in the field of ambient music. However, if you look closer, you will see that the Talking Heads collaborator's latest release is simply nothing more than an elaborate screensaver for your computer that features his signature sparse atmospheric accompaniment.

Simply put, 77 Million Paintings uses generative software that merges light drawings done by Eno that "merge" into each other at random. If uninterrupted, the program will show 77 million images. The point Eno is trying to make is that music and art are meant to be captured in the moment, but whether that comes across as genius or pretentiousness is entirely up to the eye of the beholder.
