Jim Marshall - Famed Rock Photographer Dies

Jim Marshall, the photographer who captured some of rock & roll’s most unforgettable images including photos of Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar at Monterey Pop and Johnny Cash flipping the bird at San Quentin, died in his sleep last night in New York. He was 74.

Marshall’s work includes the famous photo of Jimi Hendrix setting his guitar on fire at the Monterey International Pop Festival and Johnny Cash at San Quentin. He was the only photographer allowed backstage at The Beatles’ last concert in 1966, according to the New York Times. He is credited with more than 500 album covers and was the photog of choice for Hendrix, Janis Joplin and The Rolling Stones.
