Should The E Street Band Move Forward Without The Big Man? – #htconvo

As those in the music world and beyond continue to mourn the loss of Clarence Clemons, the saxophonist for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, our #htconvo on @Hidden_Track yesterday asked our followers if The Boss and the band should continue without the Big Man.

Followers who were for the band pushing on were asked to supply who they would choose as a possible replacement for Clemons.

Best of Cover Wars: Hallelujah Edition

[Originally Published: May 25, 2010]

Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, off his 1984 album Various Positions, is one of those songs that seems ubiquitous but the original version rarely heard. The song plays out as an epic saga and has a seemingly endless supply of lyrics that never drag on if delivered properly. It’s been covered nearly as many times as there are verses. Countless times it’s appeared on soundtracks to films and television shows as a poignant backdrop to directors’ attempts at tugging on heartstrings. While what follows are each great renditions, I implore you to start with the original done by a maestro and true craftsman of song.

Cover Wars

The Contestants:

Jeff Buckley: Buckley’s hauntingly dramatic version from his 1994 debut Grace is the best known cover of Hallelujah. It’s one of the best known covers of any song ever. Many people who love the Buckley version have no idea Cohen was the originator – I know I’ve met more than a few.

Mike Gordon Shares a Behind The Scenes Look at Phish Tour Using Twitter

Last week we checked in on Phish Tour via Twitter, noting the stellar job the guest tweeters for YEMBlog (@YEMBlog) have been doing and praising the official Phish From the Road feed (@Phish_FTR) for giving fans a behind-the-scenes look into what the band is up to when not on stage. While @YEMBlog continued to provide colorful and descriptive tweets from the shows, @Phish_FTR basically stopped tweeting outside of live setlist updates.

But just today @Phish_FTR and bassist Mike Gordon (@Mike_Gordon) started tweeting from Darien Lake where the band takes the stage tonight. We have only one thing to say about the twitpics and inside looks at living on the road these tweets provide: MORE.

Tweeting From Phish Tour

Phish Tour is in full swing and that means two things:  the Phish From the Road Twitter feed (@Phish_FTR) is cranking out official updates and the YEMBlog (@YEMBlog) guest tweeters make it the feed to follow for live insight during the shows. The @Phish_FTR feed started out strong tweeting beyond the live setlist and venturing into behind-the-scenes tweets that included shots of the band backstage and on the tour bus. While we hope there are more tweets like those to come, @YEMBlog guest tweeter Justin Bolognino (@jbolognino) gave followers plenty of views from the fans’ perspective at the Saturday Bethel Woods show, via vibrant pictures and instant animated .gifs.

Here’s a look at what Phish was up to when not on stage in Bethel Woods

Morning Benders Tweet From Studio

Christopher Chu (formerly @ohchu now @chrischu), lead singer and multi-instrumentalist of The Morning Benders, was one of the artists included in our B List of 20 Twitter Feeds to Follow. Not long after, the band launched its own official Twitter feed, @morningbenders to coincide with Chu’s personal tweets.

We highly recommend giving the band a follow as they’ve already been letting fans into their recording process by live tweeting from the studio as they record the follow-up to last year’s stellar album, Big Echo.

Bon Iver #nowplaying Thanks to iTunes

Thanks to iTunes and its major #FAIL yesterday, today I’m #nowplaying Bon Iver’s (@boniver) new, self-titled album. You may be thinking, “Bon Iver’s new album doesn’t come out until June 21, what’s up with iTunes?” What’s up with iTunes is that the album, instead of being put up only for pre-order, instead went live on the online store and was quickly downloaded. It spread like wildfire on file sharing sites and a quick search on Twitter for “Bon Iver” indicates the album is #nowplaying on many an iPod. For those who are more ninja than pirate, the single Calgary is available for download at the Bon Iver website.

That’s what I’m #nowplaying today, READ ON to look at what our contributors @Hidden_Track have been listening to lately…

Review in Tweets: Fleet Foxes / Cave Singers

Fleet Foxes and their openers The Cave Singers, two Seattle-based bands, played the city’s Moore Theatre for the second consecutive night last evening to a sold-out and enthusiastic hometown crowd. I live-tweeted from the show for @Hidden_Track and to get a sense of what it was like to attend I’ve complied my tweets and twitpics below.

Both bands had the audience’s strict attention all night. The Cave Singers, who drew enough fans to more than half fill the Moore for their set, warmed up the stage with their blend of psychedelic-folk rock lead by lead singer Pete Quirk’s raspy growls and charming stage presence. Fleet Foxes, on the day their sophomore album Helplessness Blues was released, commanded the stage and offered a blistering and genuine performance of new and old tunes.

The Debut of Instant Feedback and Rogue Wave’s Twitter War w/ We The Kings

One of the prevailing characteristics of Twitter is its immediacy – a simple tweet or retweet and nearly anything can go viral. After Lollapalooza announced its lineup late Monday night, we asked our @Hidden_Track followers for #instantfeedback on how they ranked the list of performers on a scale of 1-10.  Based on the responses to our crowdsourcing, the lineup came in at a very average “5.”

In a different sort of twist to getting instant feedback on Twitter, Californian indie rockers Rogue Wave found themselves in Cleveland ready to play the Springfest at Case Western Reserve University, but without any instruments due to an airline losing their luggage. The band allegedly asked headliners We The Kings to borrow gear, to which We The Kings allegedly refused. Rogue Wave then took to @roguewaveband to ask their fans for some instant feedback on We The Kings. READ ON for more on this Twitter war…
