Martin Perna - Antibalas
Best Albums of 2004
  • TV on the Radio - Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes
These are close friends of mine and I played on the record, so I'm a bit biased, but I love the record, all the energy, the lyrics. It is very relevant and artistic.

Favorite Live Performance of 2004
  • Antibalas with Tunde Williams/Brown Fellinis/Blackalicious at the Yerba Buena Art Center, June `04 in San Francisco. A mutual friend from Nigeria put us in touch with Tunde and we met him an hour before the show. He sat in with us on "Gentleman and My Lady's Frustration." Later in the summer, he learned some of our original songs, and played some solos on some recordings that we plan
    to release in 2005.

Favorite On-Stage Moment/Show of 2004
  • Halloween show with Antibalas in uniform/costume as the masked man on the cover of Who Is this America record. It was the only time we¹ve ever agreed to dress alike, and for the first time, we actually looked sharp onstage.

Classic Album or Artist You Rediscovered This Year
  • Minnie Ripperton - Greatest Hits
  • Joni Mitchell - Blue
  • Curtis Mayfield - Curtis

Artist You Are Most Excited About in 2005
  • Ricardo Cortés/Magic Propaganda Mill. He has a new book called It's Just a Plant out which is a beautiful color story book about a responsible herb-smoking parent who educates her daughter about marijuana.

Best New Gadget You Can't Live Without
  • The iPod, with a cigarette plug charger and radio transmitter and separate microphone. I hope the batteries don't wear out. I'll probably lost it.

Guilty Pleasure of the Year
  • Using the computer to make music, learning how to use a sequencer and how to sample stuff. Stay tuned for the Ocote Electric record coming up soon. As for Antibalas electro-records, don¹t hold your breath...

The Retro Comeback You're Hoping for in 2005?
  • All the surviving members of Fela Kuti’s Afrika 70 band reunited with Amayo and Antibalas filling in the gaps...

Selection for Person of the Year
  • My mother, Jane Perna, for staying alive and thriving after three rounds of serious cancer since 1998.
