Papa Mali
Best Albums of 2005
  • Etienne de Rocher - Self-titled, Fog City  Records  -  This San Francisco artist has just released the long-in-the-making debut record that delivers what fans of Jack Johnson, Beck and Ben Harper have really been waiting for, and delivers it without feeling the slightest bit derivative. This is the sound I want to hear when I turn on the radio. Modern, yet retro (in all the right ways) this is groovy, fuzzy, hip California pop at its very best. Just right for a drive up the Pacific Coastal Highway with the top down ( which is exactly how I experienced it). Perfect.

Favorite Live Performance of 2005
  • Two Gallants at High Sierra. Songs of dark beauty and unflinching, literate passion. First time I have cried at a show since seeing Van Morrison years ago. Devastating and glorious.

Personal Favorite On-stage Moment/Show of 2005
  • ( 5 way tie) playing with Cyril Neville, in Austin on his birthday and seeing the look on his face when Charles Neville, Ivan Neville, Henry Butler and Radiators Dave Malone and Ed Volker all showed up unexpectedly to jam. AND singing with Galactic at Mishawaka...AND my late night fest closing set @ High Sierra Vaudeville tent...AND my set with George Porter Jr and Johnny Vidacovich @ House of Blues' Parrish in NOLA during Jazzfest AND my 1st Annual Stone Soul Picnic in NOLA w/many of the greats mentioned above PLUS Otis Taylor, Anders Osborne, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Rockin Dopsie Jr.....wow, what a year!

Classic Album or Artist You Rediscovered This Year
  • Everything by Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66 and Burt Bacharach on the A&M label.

Best Film You Saw This Year
  • (tie) Me You and Everyone We Know and No Direction Home.

Artist You Are Most Excited About In 2006
  • Ruthie Foster - This Texas based singer, guitarist and songwriter is poised to be the biggest breakout success story since Norah Jones. A southern black woman who wears her small-town, rural upbringing with pride and whose singing style evokes all the greats - Mavis, Aretha, Chaka, Mahalia - while maintaining a style that is all her own. Her guitar style is evocative of Mississippi John Hurt, Taj Mahal and Mance Lipscome and her material is top notch southern soul. I am proud to announce that I will be producing her new album.

Best New Gadget/Equipment/Technology you can't live without
  • My T-Mobile Sidekick...wireless on-line 24/7...my latest gadget and hobby all rolled into one.

Guilty Pleasure of the Year
  • 60’s pop on vinyl - by the ton

Person of the Year
  • every single survivor of Hurricane Katrina. They still need our help. Let's keep on giving, y'all!

A Memorable/ Humorous/Classic Moment on the tour bus/on the road in 2005
  • Driving non-stop, cross-country from San Francisco to Athens, GA., playing a show with Mofro and the Greyhounds at the Georgia Theatre, leaving right after the gig and then having to appear a few hours later on Good Morning Birmingham TV show on a rooftop as the sun was rising while a goofy weatherman with fake hillbilly teeth and dressed as a scarecrow, danced around us.  All without a shower, a hotel or anything but van-sleep ( which isn't real sleep). Fellini-esque. The surreal life, for real. When musicians talk about paying dues, lend a sympathetic ear. You have to be insane to do these things intentionally.
