Todd Pasternack - Marlow/Ominous Seapods
Best Albums of 2005
  • Grace Potter and the Nocturnal: Nothing But The Water  -  GP&N have tapped into that soulful, funky, bluesy, gospel sound of the early-mid 70’s with such conviction and command over it, you’d think they invented it.  Well perhaps they’ve reinvented it with this record.  Recorded in a 150-year-old barn in Vermont, the sonic palette is warm and natural balancing out the raucous slide guitars and screaming B3.  Not to mention Potters voice.  You could plotz!

Favorite Live Performance of 2005
  • Jeff Tweedy Solo at The Egg in Albany, NY (11/14/05) Tweedy had us at “hello.”  With his self-deprecating, crowd-taunting humor, Tweedy carried the audience through a heartfelt evening of Wilco, Uncle Tupelo and Woody Guthrie.  He later brought out Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche (who opened the show) for a bunch of Wilco songs.  Their chemistry was undeniable and it brought the evening to unexpected, but very welcome place: a rock show.

  • Jeff Tweedy Solo at The Egg in Albany, NY (11/14/05)  -  Jeff Tweedy explaining how since the lights shining up from the foot of stage were pretty much blacking out the entire audience, every time someone from the audience would scream something out at him, he felt like they were just the voices in his head.  Hysterical.

Classic Album or Artist You Rediscovered This Year

  •  Radiohead: The Bends  -  My god.  I feel like such an ass that I didn’t catch on to them back in the 90’s.  This album is ridiculous.  I pop it on almost every day.  It’s kinda scary, actually.

Best Film You Saw This Year

  • Good Night, and Good Luck  -  Maybe because it’s still fresh in my mind, but Good Night, and Good Luck was simply an electrifying movie.  Besides the historical plot (which is utterly frightening) the acting is top-notch, the dialogue is witty and thought provoking and the directing is pretty unbelievable considering this is George Clooney’s first go at it.

Artist You Are Most Excited About In 2006

  • Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.
Granted, the style of music they play isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but they write incredibly well-crafted songs.  They also seem like they can go anywhere musically in the future.  Tight band, great on-stage chemistry.  Watch out people!

Best New Gadget/Equipment/Technology you can't live without
  • It’s not that “new” but my Powerbook G4 is my closest friend…next to my wife.

Guilty Pleasure of the Year

  • Netflix  -  This is genius.  No late fees, baby!  Three movies at a time.  And a huge selection of films including some killer music documentaries.
