Glide's 4th Annual Best of 2006: From the Artists' Perspective

By Glide Staff

Everyone makes their standard "best of's," top 10s" and "year in review" lists, but each December we like to take that model a couple of steps further. We go straight to the artists to see where they found inspiration over the past twelve months, and we don't stop with just album choices. We dig a bit deeper and go for a broader picture of the past year in art. From classic moments on the road to their guilty pleasure confessions, this is a panoramic snapshot of "the best of 2006," and a peek into what to expect in '07.

Best Albums of 2006
  • Sufjan Stevens: The Avalanche

Favorite Live Performance of 2006
  • ALO late night at High Sierra - The cheerleading portion was too much. I'm convinced that everyone has a little bit of cheerleader in them
  • Jam room on Jam Cruise with Reggie Watts - It was difficult to remember what planet we were on it was so jammy jam jam.

Your Personal Favorite On-stage Moment/Show of 2006
  • EO at the Oregon Country Fair when we blew the power grid in the last 5 minutes of our set and ended with a huge group OM. Something about the sudden stop, confusion, then the OM was truly magical and could never be planned.
  • Conducting both Hot Buttered Rum and New Monsoon at WOW Hall in Eugene. I had never done it quite like that before and the magic we created has carried over to many more musical experiences with both bands this past year.

Classic Album You Discovered This Year
  • David Crosby’s If I Could Only Remember My Name.  The first track, “Music is Love” says it all.

Best Film You Saw This Year
  • Little Miss Sunshine

What Song From The Past Year Do You Wish You Wrote
  • “Irreplaceable” by Beyonce. I'm sure the songwriters on this one are making BANK!

Artist You Are Most Excited About In 2007
  • Live painters at EO shows - I love seeing what they come up with and the number of paintings sold for a good cause and hanging in people’s living rooms is growing.
  • Sufjan Stevens - I love his production, instrumentation and songwriting.

Your Latest Guilty Pleasure
  • The TV at my house doesn’t get a single channel, so renting and watching every episode of the Lost series has been a serious guilty pleasure. Thank God we caught up and have a little down time before they start churning them out again!

Favorite Site On The Net
  • Not to be redundant, but I love browsing YouTube.

A Memorable/ Humorous/Classic Moment On The Road in 2006
  • [Jon] Fishman describing IN DETAIL milking his cow and other chores on his farm during our Northeast tour in October.

Best YouTube Video You Saw This Year
