Glide's 4th Annual Best of 2006: From the Artists' Perspective

By Glide Staff

Everyone makes their standard "best of's," top 10s" and "year in review" lists, but each December we like to take that model a couple of steps further. We go straight to the artists to see where they found inspiration over the past twelve months, and we don't stop with just album choices. We dig a bit deeper and go for a broader picture of the past year in art. From classic moments on the road to their guilty pleasure confessions, this is a panoramic snapshot of "the best of 2006," and a peek into what to expect in '07.

Best Albums of 2006
  • I was kinda disappointed by a lot of albums that dropped this year, but Fishscale was on point. Ghost was in peak form again and the beats were ridiculous. Jay and Lupe’s albums were decent, but I’m anxious to hear the new Nas joint

Personal Favorite On-stage Moment/Show of 2006
  • No question, performing at the Diesel-U-Music Awards. We only did one song, and people were just sitting at tables, (plus I’d lost my voice partying the night before) but it was my first time in London and the whole production was crazy.

Best Film You Saw This Year
  • The Departed was just ill. I heard after the fact that like most good movies nowadays, it was based on a foreign film. But it was so dope, I don’t even care. Plus I stumbled on an HBO film called Yesterday – heavy storyline, but the cinematography was amazing.

What Song From The Past Year Do You Wish You Wrote
  • It would have to be either Nas, “The World Is Yours,” or Common, “I Used To Love H.E.R.” Both had me in awe the first time I heard them and made me want to be an emcee.

Artist You Are Most Excited About In 2007
  • Umm, I guess me. Not even in a conceited way, I’m just excited about what I’m doing next.

Your Latest Guilty Pleasure
  • Man, Flavor of Love, hands down. It’s crazy because I came up on Public Enemy, and I know Chuck and Grif are shaking their heads every time it’s comes on, but damn it’s entertaining. Plus I saw New York’s crazy ass with Oyster at a club in Hollywood a couple months ago.

Favorite Site On The Net
  • www.Allhiphop.com – It doesn’t look that fresh, but they always post the latest diss songs and the rumors are fun to read

A Memorable/ Humorous/Classic Moment on road in 2006
  • I got this random basement apartment in Hell’s Kitchen for CMJ this year where I couldn’t stand up in the shower and my cell phone didn’t work. We all went out hard the first night and I couldn’t get out of bed in the morning, so people were calling me all day wondering if I’d gotten mugged on the way home. I didn’t make it outside until about 6 PM.
