Glide's 4th Annual Best of 2006: From the Artists' Perspective

By Glide Staff

Everyone makes their standard "best of's," top 10s" and "year in review" lists, but each December we like to take that model a couple of steps further. We go straight to the artists to see where they found inspiration over the past twelve months, and we don't stop with just album choices. We dig a bit deeper and go for a broader picture of the past year in art. From classic moments on the road to their guilty pleasure confessions, this is a panoramic snapshot of "the best of 2006," and a peek into what to expect in '07.

Best Albums of 2006
  • Sean Hayes: Big Black Hole and the Little Baby Star
Sean is a mystical magician when it comes to writing songs and putting the listener in a trance.
  • Paul Simon: Surprise
I think this record is ahead of it's time. In two years, everyone will understand it.

Favorite Live Performance of 2006
  • Dave Matthews at 2am somewhere in the Bahamas, on a cruise ship, after a thunderstorm and a long day of music and scooters and swimming. Dave’s voice is shot. He did two shows earlier in the evening and still it was the best performance I have seen all year.

Personal Favorite On-stage Moment/Show of 2006
  • Last week I played in Santa Barbara with a four piece band. We played “Desert Sunrise” and at the end of the song, Ara Anderson started to play a trumpet solo. We all followed him and built the groove underneath him. It kept building and building until he was screaming through his horn. I felt like it was Barry White meets Fela Kuti.

Classic Album You Discovered This Year
  • Anything Graham Parsons. I had never listened to him before this year.

Best Film You Saw This Year
  • The Constant Gardener - Beautiful music, cinematography, and most importantly it is a profound statement made in a very artistic way.

What Song From The Past Year Do You Wish You Wrote
  • “Fidelity” by Regina Spektor - It feels so good to sing it.

Artist You Are Most Excited About In 2007
  • Tom Freund - He has a new record, and a kids record coming out. I have already heard most of the songs. He is on a Van Morrison Astral Weeks level.

Your Latest Guilty Pleasure
  • Lost , the TV show. I get them on Netflix and get all cracked out on them. I watch like five episodes in a row.

Favorite Site On The Net
  • Don't really do that.

A Memorable Moment In 2006
  • One time me and Carey Brothers were dressing up like old women from a retirement home in whales. We each were delusional and thought we were animal spirits. He was a kangaroo. I was a terradactyl. We had a tea party with the queen.

Best YouTube Video You Saw This
  • I don't really do that either. My friend once showed me some fainting goats. That was pretty funny.
