Glide's 4th Annual Best of 2006: From the Artists' Perspective

By Glide Staff

Everyone makes their standard "best of's," top 10s" and "year in review" lists, but each December we like to take that model a couple of steps further. We go straight to the artists to see where they found inspiration over the past twelve months, and we don't stop with just album choices. We dig a bit deeper and go for a broader picture of the past year in art. From classic moments on the road to their guilty pleasure confessions, this is a panoramic snapshot of "the best of 2006," and a peek into what to expect in '07.

Personal Favorite On-stage Moment/Show of 2006

Classic Album You Discovered This Year
  • None. All the classic albums concerning Hip-hop I had when they 1 st came out. So no real discovery there. As far as R&B/Funk there’s a band named Xavier that I finally got my hands on. I bought a gang of wax on the road with my DJ Zac Hendrix beat-digging, but most of it I already knew about. I take that back, Iceberg Slim’s album (the author), Reflections, is one that I did finally get my paws on, but I knew about that, too, so it’s not technically discovery.

Best Film You Saw This Year
  • “Boss Up” by Snoopadelic Films

What Song From The Past Year Do You Wish You Wrote
  • Nothing. I write my own songs (hee hee). Nothing personal, there’s a gang of great songs out there. But I admire all true lyricists and songwriters out there. Just too many to list any particulars, but P-Funk is my main inspiration.

Artist You Are Most Excited About In 2007
  • Saigon (Just Blaze’s artist)

Your Latest Guilty Pleasure
  • I feel no guilt. If people don’t like it it’s they problem, but I’m not really offensive any way you look at it.

A Memorable Moment In 2006
  • We didn’t travel by bus, but also, I’m pretty serious out there, it’s grueling for me. So my humor I guess is reserved for keeping my anger in check out there. I guess when I got flat-out drunk off of 2 bottles of good vodka that must’ve been real funny to everyone else on the tour, but not me.
