Glide's 4th Annual Best of 2006: From the Artists' Perspective

By Glide Staff

Everyone makes their standard "best of's," top 10s" and "year in review" lists, but each December we like to take that model a couple of steps further. We go straight to the artists to see where they found inspiration over the past twelve months, and we don't stop with just album choices. We dig a bit deeper and go for a broader picture of the past year in art. From classic moments on the road to their guilty pleasure confessions, this is a panoramic snapshot of "the best of 2006," and a peek into what to expect in '07.

Best Albums of 2006
  • Dave Alvin - West Of The West (Yep Rock)
One of the great California songwriters covers the best of other California songwriters, complete with Greg Leisz taking a lot of solos.
  • James Hunter - People Gonna Talk (Rounder)
The best new R&B singer, record, and collection of songs I've heard since...well, it's been too long.

Favorite Live Performance of 2006
  • Dave Douglas Quintet at the Jazz Bakery. I went three nights, and was thoroughly convinced that James Genus is the greatest bassist of all time.

Your Personal Favorite On-stage Moment/Show of 2006
  • Of my own shows, a gig at Steve Austin Music in Portland, TN, a small town near the Kentucky border, and there were A LOT of small children there. We played Raymond Scott's "Powerhouse" (a staple of cartoons) and they went off like we were playing "Freebird."

Other than mine, a Jack Sheldon gig at Jax in Glendale where between tunes he did a killing 20 minute monologue about the new waitress' nipples. After taking this abuse gracefully, she answered that he didn't have ten seconds worth of dick, so retaliation would have just been cruelty.

Classic Album You Discovered This Year
  • Ani DiFranco: Up Up Up Up Up Up - The only thing Joe Henry's ever worked on that I've liked.

Best Film You Saw This Year
  • Haven't been to a new movie. Caught up on a lot of great stuff I missed. Casino was the best film I saw this year.

What Song From The Past Year Do You Wish You Wrote
  • “ "If I Give My Soul“ by Billy Joe Shaver

Artist You Are Most Excited About In 2007
  • James Hunter. If he can follow up this album, he's bona fide. Of course, I said the same about Clint Black, and his first album is still the only great one he ever made. Also, Grayson Capps proved he had more than one good album in him, and very few people are doing that lately. Finally, the Hacienda Brothers. That rare thing: an insanely great live band that makes good records.

Your Latest Guilty Pleasure
  • Russ Meyer's autobiography -- 3 huge volumes, countless huge breasts

Favorite Site On The Net

A Memorable/ Humorous/Classic Moment On The Road in 2006
  • My trio had been listening far too much to Lewis Black's The Carnegie Hall Performance in the van, and Lewis calls Carnegie "a good fuck room" about 20 seconds into the opening. So, we're loading into Sun Studio in Memphis -- where Elvis, Jerry Lee, Cash, Howlin' Wolf etc -- all cut classics, and David White walks into
this Holy Place, looks around, and says: "Good fuck room."
